Carlisle City Aquathlon 2013
The popularity of triathlon and associated multi-sport events was highlighted on Sunday when over 120 athletes, young and old, braved a bitterly cold wind to take part in the Carlisle City Aquathlon.
Competitors took on the challenge of a swim followed by a run at the Morton Pool and Richard Rose Morton Academy in the race organised by Sport in Action and Carlisle Tri Juniors.
Distances varied according to age and the new Carlisle Tri Juniors club was well represented with 40 athletes racing. Notable performances came from 8 year old Megan Russell 2nd girl in the youngest category and Camilla McKnespie, also second girl in the 13 to 14 age group. The boys weren’t to be outdone with Luke Moss and James Dickson 2nd and 3rd in their age group and Edward Moss 4th in the very competitive 10 and 11 year old wave.
In the adult race Penrith triathlete Jon Fletcher of Arragon’s Cumbrian Tri Club narrowly beat Greg Turner of Ayrodynamic Triathlon Club to the top sport after a close run race. For the ladies, first place went a little further afield with Lucy Courtney of Hexham’s One Life Racing taking top honours.
One of the organiser’s, and secretary of Carlisle Tri Juniors, Kath Smith was over the moon with the event and the way the local club performed, stating “We were all so very proud of our youngsters yesterday, enough to bring tears to the eyes!”
