Race Information

Thank you for your entry to the Hartside Duathlon.
Please read the below information carefully.

Venue

The race is based in the small Eden Valley village of Langwathby, approximately 5 miles east of Penrith on the A686. For anyone using Sat Nav the postcode is CA10 1ND. As you enter the village from Penrith, turn left towards the village green and you will see the transition area with village hall behind it.

Parking

Please ensure you park in the official event car park which is situated to the left of the village hall as you approach. It will be signed, marshalled and is free of charge. Please do not park on the road around the outside of the village green or village hall.

Registration

This will be in the village hall which is next to the green and will be signposted. Registration will be open from 0800 to 0900. Please arrive in plenty of time.

Event information and course maps will be available on the walls around the village hall.

Pick up your race numbers, front for run and rear for bike (yes, race belts are permitted) and pick up your timing chip and bike number.

Please wear your timing chip around one of your ankles and stick your bike number sticker somewhere on your cycle.

Relay teams should exchange the timing chip in transition area at the end of each section.

Race Briefing

The race briefing will be at 09:15 near the transition area.

Race Start

09:30 hours near village green.

First Run

Both runs are almost identical. They consist of a two lap 3 mile circuit of undulating roads around the village. The run is all on tarmac roads.

Transition 1 (T1)

Enter transition as directed and collect your bike (remembering to put your helmet on and fasten it before moving the cycle). Leave transition and mount your bike as directed by the marshals.

Bike

PLEASE ENSURE YOU CHECK YOUR BIKE OVER IN ADVANCE OF THE RACE AND MAKE SURE YOUR BRAKES ARE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER.

Please make sure you know the bike route. See the link at the bottom of the page.

You will be directed towards the main road where you should turn left. You are now on the A686 which you should follow all the way to Melmerby where the climb of Hartside begins. The climb ascends for 4 miles to the left turn to Renwick. This is a very popular route with ‘Sunday drivers’ (including motor cyclists). Be aware that the bikes can come past quite quickly and often in groups.

Also be mindful that at its highest point you will be approximately 500m above sea level. Even in the height of summer it can be cold here, please make sure you are dressed appropriately, especially for the descent.

Take care on the descent; it is steep in parts, with some very sharp bends including switchbacks. Although traffic will be light, you could very likely encounter farm traffic and even cyclists coming the other way (it is part of the C2C route).

You will pass a section where the road narrows near a farm, please take care here.

Once on the edge of Renwick turn left. (NOTE – JUST AFTER THIS RENWICK LEFT TURN THERE IS A RIGHT HAND BEND FOLLOWED BY A LEFT TURN SIGN POSTED ‘GLASSONBY.’ THE ROAD MARKINGS ARE WORN HERE AND YOU COULD BE CONFUSED INTO THINKING THE ROAD GOES LEFT, IT DOESN’T, IT GOES RIGHT SO PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF TURNING LEFT HERE. KEEP GOING ONTO THE NEXT ONE SIGN POSTED KIRKOSWALD (KO) WHICH WILL BE MARSHALLED).

The junction close to KO has a limited view to the right, please take care. Once in KO there is a 90 degree left hand bend which is encountered on a steep (13%) and fast downhill section, so please be careful.

Once through the village turn left at the next marshal and towards Glassonby. There is a steep half mile climb just before Glassonby. Once in the village travel through (do not turn off anywhere) and towards Little Salkeld. The road through Little Salkeld is steep and there is a left hand bend, please be careful.

Follow the road back to Langwathby and dismount before the transition area. Enter transition as directed & rack your bike, remove your helmet and exit for final run.

Supporters on bike route

Please be aware that if any supporters/family intend to watch the race anywhere on the bike course THEY MUST NOT PARK ON THE HIGHWAY, ESPECIALLY ON HARTSIDE. There are a small number of parking areas on the climb so please make use of these. The local police force patrol Hartside quite heavily on Sundays as a result of the motor cyclists, they will not be impressed by poor parking which may endanger other road users!

Run 2

The second run is exactly the same as the first.

The finish

Once back in the village you will be directed across the finish line and over the timing mat. Please ensure you hand your timing chip to the marshal.

Event Photos

Please try and smile around the course as Sport Sunday will be taking event pictures!

Presentation

The presentation will be in the village hall as soon as possible after the last finisher crosses the line.

There will be prizes for the first three male and female athletes overall (if a veteran finishes in the top three they will win the overall prize and the vet prize roles down).

There will be age group prizes too, depending upon final entries but likely to be V40 top 3 male and female, V50 top 2 male and female and V60+ winners.

There will also be prizes for the first male team, female team and mixed team.
